New Zealand's capital, Wellington, is an urban running paradise and on a fine day it is hard to beat as a city running destination. Heidi and I left our accommodation and within a couple of minutes were on the waterfront, heading out to Oriental Bay to summit Mt Victoria and overlook the city and Harbor with a quick descent along the Southern Walkway - awesome. Followed by a coffee at one of the many excellent Wellington cafes of course.
A Mt Victoria summit run via Oriental Bay from the city can be completed in a number of ways with plenty of lung busting stairways past the contrast of yesteryear wooden villas and very modern apartments, all perched precariously on the mountain side. I recommend running the length of Oriental Bay to the eastern starting point of the Southern Walkway where the trail markers and peeps of the summit naturally lead you on through the trees. Afterwards, use the myriad of mountain bike trails for excellent single trail down hill running. You will fly down in minutes and may well pass the scene location from the Lord of Rings where Frodo cowered under the roots of a tree while a blackrider snorted above him.
